Shikoku’s Tallest Mountain

Spectacular views overlooking Mt Ishizuchi

When I was living in central Shikoku, I was out hiking almost every weekend during the milder months and I can easily say Shikoku has some amazing hikes of varying levels. The mountain scenes provided great inspiration for my art and a chance to enjoy the fresh air.

One particular hike that inspired me was to Mt Kamegamori in Ehime Prefecture. The hike start point can be accessed from the UFO Line, which opens in spring and is an amazing drive in itself. It is also a popular touring route for motorbike riders. Having travelled the UFO Line road on motorbike, it is one of the best touring spots I’ve seen in Japan.

Each time I have been here the weather has been clear, allowing for unhindered and spectacular views across Mt Ishizuchi, the tallest mountain in Shikoku, and the surrounding mountains.

I painted this watercolour based on the view from the hike up to Mt Kamegamori in Ehime Prefecture.
