Living in Niseko Japan

Inspired by the snow scenes of Hokkaido

It was in the middle of blizzard that we moved to Niseko, Hokkaido. The amount of snow already in the town, let alone on the mountains was amazing compared to back home in Australia. Niseko is one of the snowiest places in the world and one of the best ski destinations with an average snowfall of between 10-15m a season.

The village is surrounded by beautiful mountains which helps to capture the moisture moving across from the Sea of Japan, one of the contributing factors to why it is one of the best ski resorts in the world.

Although most days in the winter have been cloudy, when the clouds do clear you will be taken away by the views of Mt Yotei, also known as Ezo Fuji (Hokkaido’s Fuji, due to to its lookalike shape). Standing at just under 1,900m in elevation, it is a beautiful site and has been a source of inspiration for my artworks.

This lino print is looking down Hirafuzaka (the main hill leading to the Grand Hirafu Ski Resort) towards Mt Yotei.
